SAFE - Mental Health Awareness Training for Professional Service Staff

Staff who are student-facing in professional services departments or academic schools. There will be a separate training for academic teaching staff.

Course information

This course is designed to equip university staff with the essential skills and knowledge to effectively support students facing mental health challenges. Participants will enhance their skills in communicating empathetically and confidently handling difficult conversations. The training covers practical strategies for identifying distressed students, facilitating supportive conversations, and how to flag students to Student Services. Staff will also develop assertiveness skills to maintain boundaries while offering meaningful support, ensuring a healthy and supportive learning environment for all students.

Aims and objectives

Discuss Support Options Available at the University:

  • Inform staff about the range of聽support services and resources available within and external to the university聽
  • Clarify how and when to signpost students to these services

Cover Challenging Student Scenarios and How to Support a Student Through Them:

  • Present common scenarios staff may encounter when supporting students with mental health difficulties, such as signs of distress, drug use, or GBV.
  • Provide guidance on how to approach these situations sensitively and effectively.
  • Offer strategies for de-escalating and managing difficult conversations whilst maintaining professional boundaries.

Clarify Your Role in a Supporting Capacity:

  • Define the staff鈥檚 role in supporting students, highlighting the balance between offering support and recognising the limitations of their role (i.e., when to escalate issues to mental health professionals).
  • Encourage self-care practices for staff to manage the emotional demands of supporting students.

Explore Different Communication Styles:

  • Provide an overview of various communication styles and their impact on student interactions.
  • Highlight the importance of active listening, empathy, and non-judgemental communication in supporting mental health.
